British director, born on August 4, 1953 in Manchester, United Kingdom. He was educated at St. Benedict's School, Ealing and Queen's College, and Cambridge, where he studied English and Law. He co-founded the theatrical company Cheek by Jowl with Nick Ormerod in 1981. He also made theater, opera, and ballet productions with a variety of companies around the world. He received an honorary degree from the University of Warwick in 1992, and in 2004 he was awarded Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his work in France. He was awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2017 for his services to the Theatre. His credits include Bel Ami, The Big Fish, and The Winter's Tale.
