An American director, screenwriter, and producer, born on April 23, 1956, in the District of Columbia, to a lawyer father and a teacher mother. She graduated from Harvard University in 1978. After her graduation, she traveled to Los Angeles, where she worked as a freelance critic. In 1983, her first novel was published. Among her famous films are Edward Scissorhands (1990), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), and Corpse Bride (2005).
