An Italian director and actor, born in Sora, Lazio, Italy. He worked as a clerk to support his family, and then began his career by acting in the theater. He joined actress Tatiana Pavlova's theater company in 1923, and in 1933, he established a private production company with his wife Giuditta Rissone and his friend Sergio Tofano. The company collaborated with many prominent directors, such as Luchino Visconti. In the 1940s, he began directing films, the most prominent of which include Shoeshine (1946), Bicycle Thieves (1948), Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) and The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (1970). The last two won Oscars for Best Foreign Film. He was married to Giuditta Rissone, after which he married María Mercader until his death in France on November 13, 1974.
