A Canadian environmental activist and broadcaster, born in Vancouver, British Columbia. He received his doctorate in zoology from the University of Chicago in 1961, and was a professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of British Columbia from 1963 until his retirement in 2001. Starting in the mid-1970s, he became known for his television and radio work, documentaries, and books about nature and the environment. His work includes being the host and narrator of the famous science program The Nature of Things.
