An Austrian director and screenwriter, born on March 23, 1942, in Munich, Germany, to German actor and director Fritz Haneke and Austrian actress Beatrix von Degenschild, and raised in Wiener Neustadt, Austria. He joined the University of Vienna and studied philosophy,...Read more psychology, and drama after failing to achieve his early attempts at acting and music. After graduating, Haneke became a film critic. He made his directorial debut on TV in 1974, while his first feature film was The Seventh Continent (1989), which featured elements of his uniquely violent style that came to define his later career. His other notable films include the critically acclaimed The Piano Teacher (2001), which won the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival as well as the Best Actress and Best Actor awards for Isabelle Huppert and Benoît Magimel respectively. Haneke also worked with French actress Juliette Binoche, presenting the films Code Unknown (2000) and Caché (Hidden) (2005).
