He began his career as an assistant to director Pasolini, even before completing his studies to obtain his bachelor's degree. In 1962, at the age of 22, he made his first feature film, based on a script written for him by Pasolini himself, under the title The Grim Reaper, after which he presented the film Before the Revolution (1964). At a later stage, Bertolucci parted ways with Pasolini, presenting his own style and ideas. Bertolucci's most notable films include The Conformist (1970), Last Tango in Paris (1972), and The Last Emperor (1987).
