An Italian director, born in Parma, Italy, on March 16, 1941, to a teacher mother and a father, who was a poet, film critic, and art historian. Bertolucci started writing when he was 15 years old, winning many prizes for his first book. Bernardo's father's relationship with famed director Pier Paolo Pasolini contributed to Pasolini's choosing of Bernardo to be one of his assistants in the movie Accattone (1961), where he met his first wife, Adriana Asti. Bertolucci joined the Faculty of Modern Literature of the University of Rome from 1958 to 1961, as he wanted to be a poet like his father. He began his career as an assistant to director Pasolini, even before completing his studies to obtain his bachelor's degree. In 1962, at the age of 22, he made his first feature film, based on a script written for him by Pasolini himself, under the title The Grim Reaper, after which he presented the film Before the Revolution (1964). At a later stage, Bertolucci parted ways with Pasolini, presenting his own style and ideas. Bertolucci's most notable films include The Conformist (1970), Last Tango in Paris (1972), and The Last Emperor (1987).
