A Mexican filmmaker, actor, and singer, who is considered one of the most well-known Latino filmmakers in Hollywood. After studying with Étienne Decroux and Jacques Lecoq in Paris, he traveled the world from 1964 to 1968 with his one-man show, "Pantomime Happy Madness". He made his directorial debut with the film El águila descalza (1971), in which he also starred.
Among the films he directed in Mexico are Inspector Calzonzin (1974) and Mojado Power (1981). He received six Ariel Awards and many international film awards. He appeared in many Mexican and Hollywood films, including The Wild Bunch (1969), El Topo (1970), and Used Cars (1980). His credits as a director include A Walk in the Clouds (1995), Picking Up the Pieces (2000), and The Magnificent Ambersons (2002).
