An American actor, born in New York City, New York, USA, on February 5, 1919, as Aaron Chwatt. He married three times and had two children. His most notable films include The Longest Day (1962), They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), and The Poseidon Adventure (1972).
He was also a successful composer, pop-songwriter, and comedian. In 1942, he got a role in the Broadway play Vicki, after which he joined the US Marine Corps, returning after his discharge to Broadway, until he got his big break on television, presenting The Red Buttons Show in 1952, which led to a role in the film Sayonara (1957), for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role as well as a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960 for his television work. He died on July 13, 2006, in Century City, California, USA.
