An American cinematographer, born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. His father, Sol, was a cameraman for Movietone News, and his uncle, Morrie Roizman, was a film editor. He went to Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where he studied math and physics. He started his career shooting TV ads. His debut as a director of photography was in Stop! (1970). He is known for The French Connection (1971), Tootsie (1982), and The Exorcist (1973). He received five Academy Awards nominations for several of his films, such as Tootsie (1982), Wyatt Earp (1994), and Network (1976).
