Her family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, but she attended high school in Jellico in the same state and studied briefly at Ward–Belmont College in Nashville. She moved to Washington, DC, to continue her music training and begin her artistic career. She also entered the field of cinema and presented several works, including The King Steps Out (1936) and Louise (1939). |
