American actor, born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, USA on January 10, 1904. He received two stars on the Walk of Fame for his work in film and television. He got married to Gwendolyn Bolger (1929-1987) and remained with her until his death. He began his career in theatrical performance as a dancer and singer, and contributed to the formation of a performance troupe, which presented some of their shows in Broadway theaters. He achieved the success that made MGM Company sign a contract with him in 1936 to present a number of films, which met with success, but he preferred Returning to Broadway and in the early fifties he turned to television, with some small roles in the cinema. Among his most important works: The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Harvey Girls (1946), and Where's Raymond?. He died on January 15, 1987 in Los Angeles.
