A Czech-Icelandic singer and actress, born in Valasske Mezirici, Czech Republic. She started playing piano when she was seven and took up guitar at eight when her father bought her a guitar, and she immediately started playing and learning songs. She later collaborated with Glen Hansard of the Irish rock band The Frames, forming a duo with him called The Swell Season. In 2007, she collaborated with Hansard on the independent film Once, written and directed by John Carney, and she and Hansard wrote most of the film's songs. The film won the World Cinema Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. One of the songs they wrote together, "Falling Slowly," won an Academy Award, and she and Hansard performed the song on stage in Los Angeles in 2008. Markéta and Hansard appeared in the 2007 film I'm Not There with their version of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere."
