Spike Jonze (born Adam Spiegel) is an American director, writer, producer and actor, whose career includes commercials, film, television and music videos. Joze's feature film debut was the Charlie Kaufman-scripted Being John Malkovish (1999), which earned three Oscar nominations including best direction for Jonze. The film was a huge critical success that enforced Jonze's artistic career, and was also a commercial success, grossing $32 million over its $13 million budget. Jonze and Kaufman repeated their collaboration in 2002 with the  semi-autobiographical comedy-drama Adaptation, which starred Nicolas Cage and Meryl Streep. The film achieved critical acclaim, and once again was a commercial satisfaction, in addition to being nominated for numerous Oscars and Golden Globes, and winning a BAFTA for best adapted screenplay. After a 7-year break from filmmaking, Jonze returned with the 2009 fantasy drama Where the Wild Things Are, which combined live action, performers in costumes, animatronics and computer-generated imagery. Though not satisfactory as both previous Jonze films, the film received moderately positive reviews from critics, but was a box office disappointment, due to its relatively large budget of $100 million. In 2013, Jonze directed his first solely written script: Her, which starred Joaquin Phoenix and the voice of Scarlett Johansson, and centered on a man who develops a relationship with an intelligent computer operating system (OS) with a female voice and personality. Her has received widespread critical acclaim. The film was greatly praised for its direction, screenplay, production design, score, and the performances of Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara and Scarlett Johansson's vocal portrayal of Samantha. Jonze's screenplay was particularly acclaimed and has earned Jonze many Best Screenplay awards for 2013. In addition to a successful career in film, Jonze is also known for his music video collaborations with Fatboy Slim, Weezer, Beastie Boys and Björk.
