An Irish writer, novelist, and journalist, born in Dublin, Ireland. She began her career as a teacher before turning to journalism and writing. She then moved to London, where she became editor-in-chief of The Irish Times in the British capital, and published her first novel Light a Penny Candle in 1982, which became a bestseller. She published dozens of novels and short story collections, including The Copper Beech, Silver Wedding, Evening Class, and Heart and Soul, and more than 40 million copies of her works have been sold worldwide. Among the most important artistic works based on her novels are the films Circle of Friends (1995), How About You (2007), and The Lilac Bus (1990). She died on July 30, 2012, in Dublin after a short illness, at the age of 72, due to a heart attack.
