Australian-American writer, director, and producer, born on October 10, 1921 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, to Commander Richard Charles Clavell, a Royal Navy officer. He was educated at the Portsmouth Grammar School. His works include The Great Escape (1963) and To Sir, with Love (1967). He died on September 7, 1994 in Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland.
