An American journalist and writer, born on September 1, 1945, in Washington, D.C., United States. He has worked as a journalist for The New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, GQ, O, and The Oprah Magazine; moreover, he is a regular contributor to Rolling Stone.
Spencer has taught at Columbia University, the University of Iowa, Williams College, Bard College's Bard Prison Initiative, and the University of Virginia. He attended the University of Illinois, Roosevelt University, graduating from the University of Wisconsin. Also, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004 and has lived in a small town in upstate New York for the past 20 years.
