An American actress, born on February 13, 1944, in New York City, as Susan Williams Antonia Stockard. She was trained in acting at HB Studio in New York City. She began her acting career with the experimental Theatre Company of Boston before moving to New York, where she made her Broadway debut. She has appeared in many series, plays, and films. Her notable works include The Girl Most Likely to... (1973), Grease (1978), Where the Heart Is (2000), and Practical Magic (1998). Among the various awards and nominations she received are a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Six Degrees of Separation (1993), a Daytime Emmy Award for her role in Jack (2004), and 2 Primetime Emmy Awards for her roles in The West Wing (1999) and The Matthew Shepard Story (2002). Channing married four times, and among her former spouses are Paul Schmidt and David Debin.
