A Hungarian film director, born in Budapest, Hungary, to a Jewish family. In 1956, he fled his homeland for the United Kingdom due to the Hungarian Uprising and began his career with the Associated British Picture Corporation. He worked as an assistant editor, assistant cameraman, and eventually third, second, and first assistant director on several British films in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He worked with some of the legendary British directors, including Sir Carol Reed, David Lean, Anthony Asquith, and Fred Zimmerman. He began directing for television in Hollywood and London. In 1967, he signed a contract with Paramount Studios, where he finally achieved his dream and directed his first feature film, Negatives (1968), followed by works such as The Ruling Class (1972), The Changeling (1980), and The Krays (1990).
