An American actress, born in Manhattan, New York on October 31, 1925. Grant started her career at a young age, and after graduating from high school, she won a scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. She found success as a stage actress on Broadway, garnering acclaim for her role in the play Detective Story, a role she reprised in the film adaptation of the play in 1951, and for which she won the Best Actress Award at Cannes Film Festival and received her first Academy Award nomination. During the McCarthy era, Lee Grant was blacklisted among other artists in the film industry who were accused of having communist sympathies, and she only appeared in a few roles during that period, then years later she made a comeback. In the eighties, Lee Grant focused on producing and directing independent and documentary films, for which she won several accolades. Throughout her career, Grant won many awards, including the Academy Award, Emmy Award, and the Directors Guild of America Award.
