He got married 4 times, Alice Delbridge (1927-1931), with whom he had a child, and they got divorced. Catherine Willard (1931-1945), with whom he had a child, and they got divorced. Ethel Smith (1945-1947) and they got divorced. Alice Murphy (1949-1991) and she stayed with him until his death. He was born to a father of English descent and a mother of Canadian descent. He was one of the founders of the Film Syndicate and headed it 4 terms, and he was also credited with establishing the Actors Pension Fund.
