An American actor, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on June 17, 1904. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1984, an Honorary Academy Award in 1987, and a star on the Walk of Fame in 1960. He got married 4 times, Alice Delbridge (1927-1931), with whom he had a child, and they got divorced. Catherine Willard (1931-1945), with whom he had a child, and they got divorced. Ethel Smith (1945-1947) and they got divorced. Alice Murphy (1949-1991) and she stayed with him until his death. He was born to a father of English descent and a mother of Canadian descent. He was one of the founders of the Film Syndicate and headed it 4 terms, and he was also credited with establishing the Actors Pension Fund. Among his most important works are: Crime (1949), Rosemary's Baby (1968), and Pretty Woman (1990). He died on November 29, 1991, in Santa Monica, California, USA, of lung disease.
