He teaches cinema as an assistant professor at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and Columbia University. He is known for Precious (2009), Violet & Daisy (2011), and Magic Marker (1996). He received several awards from organizations including the Directors Guild of America and the Sundance Film Festival. He is the first African American to earn an Oscar for writing, directing, or producing the film Precious (2009).
