American actress, born on August 20, 1956, in Illinois County. She began her life as a stage and television actress before her first film, Compromising Positions (1985). She won the Clarence Derwent Award for her performance in the 1984 play And a Nightingale Sang. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her roles in Nixon (1995) and The Crucible (1996). She received many positive reviews for her role in The Upside of Anger. She got married to artist Peter Friedman in 1990 and they separated in 2002 and continued to be close to each other to share time with their daughter, Sadie.
