An Indian writer, film producer, and director, born in West Champaran, India, he grew up on his family's farm. He studied physics at the University of Delhi and moved to Mumbai in 1972 to study at the Film and Television Institute of India. He began making films independently in 1974 and is known for his political and social films. His most important works include Pareeksha (2020), Raajneeti (2010), Apaharan (2005), Parinati (2020), Bandish (1996), and Satyagraha (2013). He has won several awards, such as the Audience Award for Best Film at the Bangkok Film Festival for his film The Death Sentence: Mrityu Dand.
