An American actress and human rights activist of Chinese descent, born in Stockton, California, United States. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in social welfare from the University of California, and a master’s degree from the University of Chicago in the 1940s. She worked as a teacher in China. Then she moved to the United States, where she began teaching sociology in California, and director Henry King introduced her to the movie screen. He was looking for an Asian dialect coach, and instead, she played a small role in the film Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955). Among her credits are Brokedown Palace (1999) and Chinatown (1974).
