Mackenzie Davis was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Her mother is from South Africa, and her father is English. After finishing her education at McGill University in Montreal, she studied acting at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York. She was particularly interested in the Meisner technique of acting. In 2011, Davis appeared in the short film, Alex (2011), and the following year in Smashed (2012). A year later, she was discovered by Drake Doremus who gave her a debut in his feature film Breathe In (2013). In 2013, Davis also received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for her role in What If (2013). She also starred in Freaks of Nature (2015), A Country Called Home (2015), and the short film Memory Box (2015). Davis received the Tribeca Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her role in Always Shine (2016).
