German actor, born on January 22, 1893, in Berlin, Germany. He was successful in the silent films period in Germany, where he was one of the highest paid actors. He left Germany in 1933 with his Jewish wife, and settled in the United Kingdom. Among his notable works: The Thief of Bagdad (1940), The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), and Casablanca (1942). He died on April 3, 1943 in California, USA.
