He won the American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Award in the criticism category in 1998. He also won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2003. His novel "Point of Impact" was adapted into the 2007 film Shooter, as well as the 2016 series of the same name.
