An Indian actress, dancer, and choreographer, born in Saharanpur. She began her career as a dancer in the 1930s before turning to acting, becoming one of the most prominent actresses in Indian theatre. She entered the world of cinema in 1946, and her real breakthrough was in the film Dharti Ke Lal (1950), then traveled to Britain after receiving a scholarship to study drama in 1962. She appeared in several works in the 1980s, such as the TV series Tandoori Nights (1985) and the film Partition (1987), and returned to India in the 1990s when she was eighty years old, and continued acting until she was ninety-five years old. Her last role was in the film Cheeni Kum (2007), alongside the famous actor Amitabh Bachchan. She died on Thursday, July 10, in New Delhi, at the age of 102.
