An English actor who was born in Nottinghamshire, England. He became well-known for his stage roles, particularly as King Lear. In addition, he used the money from his roles in movies to fund his theater productions. He appeared in plays in the Old Vic in Bristol, England, and became known for his touring productions of Shakespeare. His credits include Room at the Top (1958), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Becket (1964).
