American actor, born on December 2, 1963, in Corby, Northamptonshire, England, United Kingdom. He was born to an Irish father and a Scottish mother. He trained at the Drama School in Dublin. He won a scholarship to Mountview Theater School in England in 1983. He won the 1999 Laurence Olivier Theater Award for best-supporting performance for his role in The Weir in the 1998 season. He is known for Me Before You (2016) and Downton Abbey (2019).
