In March 1999, he participated in supervising and planning NATO military operations against Serbia, which forced the Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic to withdraw from Kosovo. After his retirement in 2001, he was succeeded in his position by General Richard Myers. Shelton joined the Democratic Senator John Edwards' presidential campaign in 2003. Shelton appeared in several documentaries, such as the series Hannity in 2010 and the film Dirty Wars in 2013.
