A former US Army officer, born in Tarboro, North Carolina, USA, he served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He holds a BA from the University of North Carolina and an MA in Political Science from Auburn University. He also studied at the US National War College and participated in the US Army in the Vietnam War. In 1996, he became a general and commander of special operations for the army. Shelton assumed the chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, succeeding General John Shalikashvili. In March 1999, he participated in supervising and planning NATO military operations against Serbia, which forced the Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic to withdraw from Kosovo. After his retirement in 2001, he was succeeded in his position by General Richard Myers. Shelton joined the Democratic Senator John Edwards' presidential campaign in 2003. Shelton appeared in several documentaries, such as the series Hannity in 2010 and the film Dirty Wars in 2013.
