An American actor of South African descent, born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He moved to the United Kingdom, where he joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He also moved to the United States, and began his career as a saxophone player with a musical band, and after a meeting with playwright Athol Fugard, he turned to theatrical acting. He also established the Black Actors Theater in San Francisco. Some of his works include Waterworld (1995) and Outbreak (1995).
