English film director and screenwriter, born in 1954 in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. He was educated at Woodleigh School in North Yorkshire. He attended Hull School of Art and Design. He studied cinema at Leeds Polytechnic. He also studied at the National Film and Television School. He then studied directing. His most famous works include Brassed Off (1996), Little Voice (1998), and Purely Belter (2000).
