British screenwriter, director, and actor, born in Oldham, England. His father had been a sergeant in the army and worked in cotton factories. After completing his education at Oldham's Ward Street Central School, Eric enlisted in the British Royal Air Force during the war. He started writing for television while serving in a special communications unit during World War II, and he continued to contribute artistically after that.
