American writer, comedian, and actor, born on October 8, 1943 in Manhattan. He was born into a prominent New York family. He worked on a large number of odd jobs before transitioning to comedy with National Lampoon magazine. He quickly became a key cast member of the inaugural season of Saturday Night Live. Among his works are as Caddyshack (1980), Fletch (1985) and The Three Friends (Three Amigos) (1986). He has hosted the Academy Awards twice (1987 and 1988), and for a brief period hosted his evening talk show, The Chevy Chase Show. Since 2009, he has appeared as Pierce Hawthorne on NBC in the sitcom Community.
