An American actor and college professor, born in Oklahoma, USA. He was the father of playwright Tracy Letts. After he graduated from Wagoner High School in 1952, he joined the US Air Force, then obtained a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. He then obtained a master's degree from the University of Tulsa and a doctorate from the University of Illinois. He received a Fulbright Scholarship, and later became a university professor of literature and writing at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He began acting after the age of fifty. Some of his credits include Passenger 57 (1992) and Cast Away (2000).
