American actor and director, born on August 10, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York. His father was a Russian Jewish immigrant, and his mother was an Austrian Jewish immigrant. He attended New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn and was active in the school's theatrical community. He made his debut in 1938. His career spanned for more than 64 years. He moved to Hollywood in 1940 and became a highly respected actor after the war. He returned to Hollywood and resumed his acting career, co-starring in films including: The Killers (1946), and Brute Force (1947). He died on August 16, 2002 in Santa Monica, California. |
