Australian writer, born in Melbourne, Australia. He moved with his family to Perth and grew up on the coast of Western Australia. Hale School was his school. As a trainee reporter, he began working for the Western Australian newspaper. He received a job offer from The Age three years later. After leaving journalism, he began writing novels, with The Savage Crows being his first published in 1976. Both the University of Western Australia and the University of Queensland awarded him honorary doctorates in literature. His writing credits include Ned Kelly (2003).
