A British novelist, born in Durham, England. She published numerous books that were translated into eighteen languages, selling over one hundred million copies. She had a harsh childhood and suffered from a rare vascular disease. From an early age, she was determined to become a writer. Her novels were adapted for film and television. She was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE), in addition to an honorary university degree from the University of Newcastle. She is known for Jacqueline (1956) and Rooney (1958).
