His parents moved to Guildford, England, after turning down a position at a university in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, and he obtained British citizenship after attending Woking County Grammar School in Surrey. After completing his school education in 1973, he traveled to the United States and Canada to work there, then returned to the United Kingdom to graduate from the University of Kent. He received a BA in English and Philosophy in 1978, and two years later an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, where he was a colleague of Malcolm Bradbury and Angela Carter.
