A British novelist of Japanese origin, born in Japan. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2017 and was nominated for the Booker Prize several times, which he eventually won for his novel The Remains of Day in 1989. He was born in Nagasaki, Japan, to Shizuo Ishiguro and Shizuko. He has an older sister named Fumiko and a younger sister named Yoko. His parents moved to Guildford, England, after turning down a position at a university in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, and he obtained British citizenship after attending Woking County Grammar School in Surrey. After completing his school education in 1973, he traveled to the United States and Canada to work there, then returned to the United Kingdom to graduate from the University of Kent. He received a BA in English and Philosophy in 1978, and two years later an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, where he was a colleague of Malcolm Bradbury and Angela Carter.
