An American actor, born in Pennsylvania, USA, on November 3, 1921. He got married three times, the first from outside the artistic community in 1949, Harriet Tendler, with whom he had two children, and the second is actress Jill Ireland in 1968 and has a child with her, and the third is actress Kim Weeks, he remained with her until his death. He was born among 15 children of an immigrant coal miner from Lithuania. He completed high school, then worked with his father in the mines, and for this reason he suffered from claustrophobia throughout his life. He served in the army during World War II, and then studied art in theaters in Pasadena, California, where one of his teachers nominated him to work in his first films You're in the Navy Now in 1951. He made several other works, including: The Magnificent Seven (1960), and The Great Escape (1963). He died on August 30, 2003 in Los Angeles, from Alzheimer's disease in addition to pneumonia.
