An American actress, born in Brooklyn, New York City, on June 30, 1917. In 1937, she got a small role in the movie Hollywood Hotel and continued to play small roles in several movies until she got her big break in the movies Wild Wind, and Forest Rangers (1942), after which she became a star. She continued to star in many movies, receiving five Academy Award nominations, until she won one in 1959 for the film I Want to Live (1958), in addition to the Golden Globe Award for the same movie. She also won a Golden Globe for her role in the movie With a Song in My Heart (1952). Her last movie was The Revengers in (1972) before she was diagnosed with brain cancer. She died on March 14, 1975 in Beverly Hills, California.
