American actor, film and television writer, born on October 5, 1905 in Bronxville, New York, USA. He graduated from Yale University and worked in nightclubs with comedy shows before working on Broadway. He was a member of the Mercury Theater before enlisting in the army. Among his most important films are: Blackboard Jungle (1955), Spartacus (1960), and Gimne a Break (1981). He got married to Dorothy Oltman Haveman in 1961, with whom he has a child, and he remained with her until his death. He died on September 15, 1991, in Santa Cruz, California, USA, from lung cancer.
