British actor, born in England, on February 22, 1908 as Lewis Ernest Watts Mills. He was born to a mathematics teacher father and a mother who ran tickets booth in the theater. After graduating from Norwich School, he moved to London and joined a dance school. Then he began his career in a music hall as a dancer and singer. He then moved to the theater, and then moved to the cinema in small roles during the 1930s. He made his debut in Hollywood in the movie Goodbye Mr. Chips (1939). He also starred in the early sixties on Broadway. He got married to the actress Aileen Raymond (1927-41), then got married to Mary Hayley Bell in 1941, and they had three children. He made 120 films and television productions over a period of eighty year. He directed and produced the 1965 movie Gypsy Girl, starring his daughter Hayley, and written by his wife, Mary. He was forced to live in Hollywood due to the desire of his daughter, Hayley, who won an Academy Award as a child. When she grew up, he returned to Britain. He won the Volpi Cup Award in 1960 for Tunes of Glory (1960), the San Sebastian Award (Donostia Award) in 1967 for The Family Way (1966), and many other awards. Although he was deaf and completely blinded in 1990, he continued to work, performing the roles of the blind. Mills was a member of the Board of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in Britain. He died on April 23, 2005 in Denham, Buckinghamshire, England, from a microbial infection in the chest.
