An English writer, born in Newcastle, England. She is best known for her novel Testament of Youth, which tells the story of her life and her painful experience with the First World War. After studying at a boarding school in Surrey, she went to Somerville College, Oxford, to study English literature. In 1915, she left her studies and volunteered to work as a nurse in France to help British soldiers. The war proved to be a painful experience when she lost her fiancé and her brother Edward. Vera admits that she was shocked by what she experienced during the war. After the war, Vera returned to Oxford to complete her studies, and in 1923, she published her first novel, The Dark Tide. In 1925, she married George Catlin, the political scientist, philosopher, and thinker, and they had one son. In 1933, she published her best-selling autobiography, Testament of Youth, which was adapted into a film of the same name.
