An American actor who was born in Morgantown, West Virginia, on July 21, 1924. He won the Prometime Emmy Award five times for his television show The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968). He enrolled in West Virginia University, but was called up in the army due to the outbreak of World War II. He gained his experience in the army, and continued to perform in nightclubs, then joined the radio to present Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders radio show, after which he participated in the 1951 opera Search for Tomorrow. He is best known for his roles in: Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977), and Pleasantville (1998).
